SQL Database Engineer

Overview
Our financial services client has several Microsoft SQL Server instances comprising a database platform that is heavily consumed across the enterprise. This role will primarily be responsible for activities that automate and modernize the administration, operation, maintenance, performance, and troubleshooting of all workloads that execute on these hosts.

The client will be migrating the SQL Server instances from on-prem to AWS over the next several years so experience with AWS services like RDS, S3, EBS, EC2, R53, and VPC is highly desired.

Finally, the database support aspect of the role is expected to deal with consumers of the database environment directly in assistance with performance, troubleshooting, and design of queries and database structure. As such, this role requires strong knowledge of table design, query tuning, and query optimization techniques in addition to strong communication skills.

Day-to-Day:
  • You will be migrating the SQL Server instances from on prem to AWS over the next several years so experience with AWS services like RDS, S3, EBS, EC2, R53, and VPC is highly desired.
  • The Senior Database Engineer will ensure the availability and optimization of our production, development, and QA database environments. Our current data environment is primarily MS SQL Server run on premises. Candidates will assist with migrating to alternative data stores that may be more appropriate based on the latency, parallelization and isolation demands of a variety of critical use cases. Experience with cloud native database technologies is helpful (AWS preferred). Experience with relational database design is a plus.
  • Candidates must have experience with database development and database administration on the SQL Server platform, preferably in an Agile environment. A solid understanding of SQL Server internals and the ability to spot problematic areas, analyze solutions, propose resolutions and direct their implementation is essential. The candidate will work with the team to provide technical expertise and guidance to multiple delivery teams in a DevOps environment.

Responsibilities:
  • Efficiently and effectively troubleshoot problems in all environments as they arise
  • Identify and correct bottlenecks
  • Review developer database code and work with developers to implement suggested enhancements
  • Occasional on-call responsibilities of mission critical systems

Qualifications:
  • Administration level expertise with Microsoft SQL Server
  • Experience with operational support of production databases.
  • Experience with cloud-based relational or non-relational stores, such as AWS Aurora, PostgreSQL, MySQL, Snowflake, MongoDB, Redis, DynamoDB.
  • T-SQL programming, performance, and optimization
  • Experience with backup/recovery tasks, user administration, data system installation and configuration
  • Data replication technologies, configuration and performance in a clustered environment
  • Scripting or software development experience (Python strongly preferred)
